Mobile E-Commerce Sales Reach New Heights During 2012

In just one short year, mobile e-commerce sales figures have climbed 4 percent. During the 2012 sales year, m-commerce sales reached a new milestone of $24.7 billion. Mobile devices now account for 11 percent of the e-commerce purchases that are made every year in the United States.

In 2010, only 7 percent of e-commerce purchases were made from a mobile device. This four-point increase in just a short time confirms the numerous analyst projections regarding the growth of mobile Internet use.

It’s projected that by 2016, over half of the Internet’s traffic will come from smartphones and tablets. It’s no surprise that e-commerce sales are following the rapid transition presented by increased mobile Internet use. As mobile devices become the most dominant user-base on the Internet, these sales numbers will also continue to increase each year.

The initial figures for 2012 were determined by analyst research performed by Emarketer, and it was also used to develop further projections for m-commerce growth in the coming years. According to Emarketer’s findings, mobile e-commerce sales will reach $38.4 billion to account for 15 percent of the consumer market by the end of 2013.

These projections reflect the analyst predictions for increased mobile device use during the next five years, but Emarketer has also performed a sales analysis by device type. The results found that tablet users made over half of the m-commerce purchases during 2012. Smartphones were close behind with 40 percent, and other mobile devices accounted for the remainder of sales.

According to these growth projections and those of other leading analysts, m-commerce will become the primary way people make online purchases in the not-so-distant future. The increased use of mobile devices for e-commerce purchases have made targeting mobile users crucial to getting the most sales possible.

With projections indicating such a rapid increase of purchases using mobile devices, mobile support and targeted marketing has become one of the highest priorities for today’s leading Internet retailers.
