Facebook Will Be Dead By 2017

Don’t quote me on that. You can thank Princeton’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for this prediction. They expect 80% of Facebook’s user base to disappear between 2015 and 2017. The study used mathematical adoption rates of infectious diseases and Google Trends research to guide their predictions (available in this PDF).

Facebook vs MySpace

Facebook has been dominating the Google Trends graph since mid-2008 and the recent MySpace reboot seems to have made little lift relative to Facebook.

So what can/should we do about this info? Social media moves so fast that its best not to make any swift decisions. As always, it is best to be as nimble as possible. If the prediction is correct you still have a long time (eons based on web timelines) to enjoy your Facebook presence. If you have been ignoring Facebook there is still time to get involved.
